SYNOPSIS
01. The collection starts with an idea about the past experiences and future plans
with the theme of _ g r a d a t i o n
The footprints, tobacco ashes and handwriting scattered about the scene of the crime
become a significant clue to Holmes.
He solves a mystery by piecing together seemingly disjointed fragments step by step,
he connects these cryptic puzzle pieces into a cohesive whole,
either validating or disproving his initial hypothesis.
02. One morning, Henry Beskerville wakes up to darkness. He is faceless.
He urgently sees Holmes, trying to maintain his composure but frantically,
to uncover the fate of the sudden disappearance of his identity.
Upon relating this bewildering tale, Holmes whisks away to the scene of the crime
with his magnifying glass, carefully inspects every corner of Baskerville’s home.
001 _ 컬렉션은 _ g r a d a t i o n 이 라는 주제로 그동안 경험되어진 흔적과 앞으로 해야 할 것에 대한 직관적 결론에 대한 생각으로부터 시작되었습니다. 홈즈는 아주 사소한 흔적들과 사소한 경험 그리고 개인적 관심에 의해 알게 된 통계적 지식을 통해서 사건을 풀어나갑니다. 발자국, 담뱃재, 필적 등 사건 현장에 널려있는 모든 것이 그에게는 단서가 됩니다. 하지만 홈즈는 경험과 관심에 의해 축적된 지식을 통해 내린 직관적 결론을 서두르지 않고 차근차근 관찰되어진 흔적을 통해 점층적으로 사실에 의거해 증명하고 설명해 나갑니다.
002 _ 헨리 베스커빌 경은 아침에 일어나보니 자신의 얼굴이 없어졌음을 알게 되었습니다. 그는 급박하게 홈즈를 만나 어젯밤 도난당한 자신의 얼굴에 대해 단호하지만 흥분된 어투로 이야기하기 시작했습니다. 홈즈는 마차를 타고 베스커빌 경의 저택으로 가서 그가 잠들었던 침실, 옷장, 계단, 그리고 창문 등에 남겨진 흔적을 돋보기로 천천히 살펴보기 시작합니다.

MVIO and Han Sang hyuk (엠비오와 한상혁)
수요일 저녁, 원고를 마치고 집에서 붕 뜬 시간을 음미하고 있는데 갑자기 전화가 왔다. 엠비오(MVIO)의 크리에이티브 디렉터인 한상혁의 전화였다. 본에서 회사를 옮기고 엠비오로의 첫 번째 컬렉션. 2주 전인가 만나서 술을 마셨을 때 처음 들었던 컨셉에 대한 이야기는 여전히 그가 바라보는 자신과 주위에 대한 이야기였고, 지난 시간 동안 쌓았던 많은 것들이 바뀌거나 사라진 지금 새로운 출발을 해야 하기에 드는 부담감도 느껴졌다. 그는 내게 이번 쇼는 정말 기대하지 말라고 했다. 하지만 곳곳에서 느껴지는 흥미로운 요소들에 대한 들뜬 설명과 얼핏 아이처럼 초롱초롱한 그의 안경 속 눈빛을 보면 여전히 그의 쇼를 기대하게 된다. 나는 그의 지인이기 전에 디자이너로서 그를 좋아하는 팬이기도 하니까.
전화의 목적은, 저녁에 약속이 있는데 같이 만나서 얘기를 하자는 것. 그와의 술자리에서도 종종 나왔던 화두이지만 한국의 젊은 디자이너들을 생각할 때 중요한 것은 역시 '바잉(buying)'이다. 아쉽고 안타깝게도 국내 디자이너가 국내의 편집매장에서 구입으로 연결되어 행거에 걸리는 일은 거의 없다. 디자이너들은 유통업체들 - 편집매장이든 백화점이든 - 에 대해 항상 '을'이고, 그렇다면 '갑'인 그들과 상생하는 방법은 정말로 없는 것인지. 마침 때가 불황의 한 가운데이지만 그래도 사람들은 새로운 것을 찾고 또 목말라하는데, 그런 것에 화답할 수 있는 시스템을 만드는 것은 진정 깰 수 없는 철옹성 같은 것인지. 또한 젊은이들이 요새 보이는 멋드러진 편집매장에 매혹되어 바이어를 꿈꾸는 듯 보이지만, 그 체계 안에 어떻게든 귀속되려고만 하지 지금의 바잉 시스템이 가진 구조적인 문제를 생각하며 고민하는 이는 단 한 명도 보지 못한 것 같아 아쉽기도 하다.
이것에 대해서는 더 많은 실무자들 - 바이어, 디자이너, 숍 스태프, 프레스, 머천다이저 등 - 과 이야기를 나눠봐야겠지만, 그의 말대로 시장을 선도하는 업체가 무언가를 바꾸려고 노력한다면, 절대 안 된다고 생각한 것, 우리가 계란으로 바위를 친다고 생각한 것이 사실은 플라스틱으로 칠한 가짜 돌덩이라서, 어딘가 바뀔 수 있는 갈라진 틈새가 있는 것은 아닐까. 10년이면 강산도 변한다는데, 사실 지금의 상황은 지난 몇 년 전만 해도 상상도 못할 정도의 어떤 변화들이 있던 것은 아니던가. 세상에 보그 코리아(VOGUE Korea)에 젊은 우리나라 신진 디자이너들의 소개가 이렇게 자주 들어간 적이 언제 있었던가.
결국 문제는 시스템이다. 이 불황에 편집매장의 사람들과 기자들과 내셔널 브랜드의 디자이너들은 변함 없이 출장을 간다. 모두 다른 목적을 가지고 있지만, 왜 파리로, 뉴욕으로, 밀라노로 가는가. 그곳은 이미 그곳의 산업, 상업적인 시스템이 확고하게 박혀 있기 때문이다. 만일 우리나라처럼 디자이너들의 편집매장 입점이 수수료로만 돌아간다면? 과연 누가 파리에, 뉴욕에 가서 직접 바잉을 해가지고 오겠는가. 한국에서는 디자이너가 '을'이다. 디자이너는 재고를 고스란히 안으니까 남아도 처리해야 할 당사자는 엄밀히 말해 디자이너가 된다. 하지만 국내의 편집매장은 해외의 디자이너들에게 몇 퍼센트의 수수료 같은 것을 주고 옷을 가져오지 않는다. 선결제이든 후결제이든, 100% 돈을 지불하고 주문량만큼의 옷을 구입한다. 물론 재고는 매장의 몫이다. 두 가지를 모두 보면 어딘가 한 곳이 손해를 보지 않으려면 타협점은 없어 보인다. 그래서 나온 묘안이 기존의 우리나라 대형 유통업체들처럼 수수료로 돌아가는 시스템이다. 이것은 현재 어느 정도 자리를 잡았고 불합리한 구석을 모두가 느끼면서도 누구도 수술대에 올려놓진 못하고 있다. 하나를 바꾼다고 바뀔 영역도 아니고, 개인이 위험부담을 전부 안기에는 들어야 할 유/무형의 손실도 꽤나 크기 때문일지도 모른다. 그래도, 우리가 어리석게도, 혹은 순진하게도 바랐던 작은 변화들. 제법 치열한 논의도 여러 번 있었지만 아직까지 마련되지 않은 어떤 시스템의 구축이 필요한 것은 자명하지 않은가. 실패도 해봤지만, 그래도 미련하게 그것을 생각하고 바꿔보려는 행동이 꼭 바보 같은 짓만은 아니니까.
2009년도 가을/겨울 시즌의 서울 패션 위크가 3월 26일 정오, 한상혁의 엠비오 컬렉션을 시작으로 그 막이 오른다. 어제의 술자리에서는 한상혁에게 직접 VIP 초대장을 받았다. 네모낳고 작고 단단한 종이 상자의 금속 손잡이를 열면 촉감이 부드러운 종이에 정말 깨알 같은 글씨가 적혀 있고, 그것을 읽어야 하는 목걸이 형태의 금속제 돋보기가 들어 있다. 돋보기를 초대장으로 넣은 이유는, 이번 쇼의 주제와 밀접한 관련이 있기 때문이다. 한 눈을 찡그리고 돋보기를 종이에 들이대면 쇼의 컨셉과, 날짜와, 시간 등을 읽을 수 있다. 참고로 이 돋보기가 없이는 쇼의 VIP 입장이 불가능하므로 반드시 지참해야 할 것이라 했다. 이런 위트를 그의 옷에서도 느낄 수 있기 때문에 내가 한상혁의 작업을 좋아하는 이유가 된다.
갑자기 이 글을 쓰게 된 것은, 어느 유명한 일본의 비쥬얼 크리에이터의 블로그를 보다가, 그가 루이뷔통의 마크 제이콥스와 예술가 타카시 무라카미와 함께 작업했던 슈퍼플랫모노그램에 대한 글을 읽다가 문득, 이었다. 나와 동시대를 사는 그런 날고 기는 사람들을 보면 가끔 위축되는 것을 느끼지만, 나 또한 그들이 모르는 어딘가에서 내가 할 일을 열심히 해야겠다고, 그러다 보면 언젠가 만나고 인사하고 같이 무언가 하는 일도 생기지 않을까, 하고 혼자 주문 아닌 주문을 걸어보는 것이다. 그리고 내 주위, 내 옆에 있는 재능을 가진 사람들과의 이야기와 작업들이 결코 헛된 것이 아니라는 것도 한 번 더 마음에 담는 것이다.
3월 26일 12시에 열리는 쇼는 시작하기 전부터 들어가서 눈과 귀와 렌즈에 담을 생각이다. 멋진 디자인을 보여주는 브랜드와 디자이너라서만이 아니라 그가 하는 생각과 꿈꾸는 것들이 나를 두근거리게 만든다. 그의 첫 번째 엠비오 컬렉션을 기대한다.

A state of the art project space - Seoul, Korea
Milan, March 10, 2009 - Launching in Seoul at the end of April 2009, the highly anticipated Prada Transformer designed by OMA/Rem Koolhaas will showcase a groundbreaking series of cross-cultural exhibitions, screenings and live events. For five months this shape-shifting venue will host multiple interdisciplinary projects, bringing a unique mix of visual arts to Korea.
The Transformer combines the four sides of a tetrahedron: hexagon, cross, rectangle and circle into one pavilion. The building, entirely covered with a smooth elastic membrane, will be flipped using cranes, completely reconfiguring the visitor's experience with each new programme. Each side plan is precisely designed to organize a different event installation creating a building with four identities. Whenever one shape becomes the ground plan, the other three shapes become the walls and the ceiling defining the space, as well as referencing historic or anticipating future event configurations.
"Waist Down - Skirts by Miuccia Prada", an ongoing project by Miuccia Prada in collaboration with AMO, makes its Korean debut on April 25, showcasing a collection of skirts "in motion" ranging from the first ever Prada show to the present day. Skirts by emerging Korean fashion students will be included to show the interaction between two fashion worlds and to amplify the meaning of fashion from different cultural perspectives.
The exhibition space will then be transformed into a cinema showing a programme of films selected by Alejandro González Iñárritu, the director of Oscar-winning Babel. "Flesh, Mind and Soul" is the concept for the unique programme - to be launched on June 26 - co-curated by film critic Elvis Mitchell, spanning multiple genres, countries and decades of filmmaking including a rich and substantial amount of physical, intellectual and spiritual films that will create a whole cinematic experience.
Subsequently, the Prada Foundation will present an exhibition, "Beyond Control", curated by Germano Celant, which will 'transform' the interior of the architectural object by OMA into an inspiring magma of works by some of the most significant contemporary artists.
Further cultural activities will be announced in the lead-up to the launch of the project. Prada and the Prada Foundation have combined their resources with their local partners' to develop an extraordinary programme for the Prada Transformer's innovative, changing stages. As the fields of fashion, art, film, design and performance now inform and influence each other with increasing diversity and complexity, this programme aims to stimulate and embrace multi-disciplinarian discourse.
Situated next to the 16th-century Gyeonghui Palace, the Prada Transformer - realized with the support of LG Electronics, Hyundai Motor Company and Red Resource Inc. - dramatically juxtaposes Korean history, tradition and folklore with this 21st-century multi-dimensional event space. Due to Seoul Metropolitan Government's passion and dedication to cultural projects, the Prada Transformer was well received and fully supported by the City. Visibly attuned to Seoul's modern positioning as a forward-looking and technologically advanced metropolis, the Prada Transformer is part of Prada's global commitment to the production of new realities in fashion, art, architecture and creative culture.
The architectural project is led by Rem Koolhaas together with associates Kunle Adeyemi and Chris van Duijn, and design architect Alexander Reichert.
As of today, the Prada Transformer is also visible online on pradatransformer.co.kr. The website is the result of a collaboration between Prada, AMO - the mirror image think tank of Rem Koolhaas's Office for Metropolitan Architecture -- and 2x4, a multidisciplinary design studio from NY focusing on art, architecture, and fashion world wide.
The concept of the site is strongly linked to the architectural project. Equal to the built pavilion, which transforms to accommodate different events, the website regenerates its graphics and contents according to the changes in use of the actual structure along time. The main navigation system is a timeline which allows users to intuitively scroll back and forward revealing the calendar of the pavilion and the related content.

Alejandro González Iñárritu - Cinema Programme: "Flesh, Mind and Soul"
The director of Oscar-multinominated Babel, 21 Grams and Amores Perros is one of the key protagonists of the Mexican new wave of directors who have made a huge impact on cinema in recent years.
The film programme is based on physical, intellectual and spiritual films that attend, shake and speak to the different parts with which we feel and perceive cinema. Co-curated by renowned film critic Elvis Mitchell, the unique grouping of films should leave viewers "both sated and hungry for more".
Elvis Mitchell is a former film critic of the New York Times and has most recently turned his talents to television, hosting KCRW's The Treatment and his own show Under the Influence for Turner Classic Movies.
Iñárritu's hard hitting and powerful style of filmmaking is grounded in a strong sense of neo-realism, often featuring character-driven, method actors like Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn, Cate Blanchett and Naomi Watts. His stories always have a political and social commentary underlying their plots, which at their core tend to focus on the fragility of family relationships.

미술, 영화, 패션이 어우러진 예술적 문화 · 공간 프로젝트 - 서울, 한국
(2009년 3월 10일, 밀라노) 세계적 명품 브랜드 프라다가 기획해 많은 관심이 집중되고 있는 프라다 트랜스포머(Prada Transformer) 프로젝트가 2009년 4월말 서울에 상륙한다. 건축가 렘 쿨하스(Rem Koolhaas)와 건축사무소OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture)가 설계를 맡은 이번 프로젝트는 전시, 영화, 공연 등 장르를 넘나드는 획기적인 문화 행사로 약 5개월 동안 회전형 건축물 내에서 독특한 크로스오버 시각 예술 패키지를 한국에 선보인다.
프라다 트랜스포머는 육면체, 십자형, 직사각형 및 원형이 결합한 4면체 철제 구조물로 구성되어 있다. 부드럽고 탄력있는 막으로 완전히 덮여 있는 이 건축물은 크레인을 통해 역동적으로 회전하며, 회전할 때마다 새로운 프로그램을 통해 방문자들에게 전혀 새로운 경험을 제공하게 된다. 각 면은 각기 다른 문화 행사를 진행할 수 있는 공간으로 사용될 수 있도록 완벽하게 설계됨으로써 한 공간에 4가지의 아이덴티티를 부여한다. 어느 한 면이 바닥 역할을 할 때 다른 세 면은 벽이 됨으로써 공간의 성격을 재정의하며, 이 배치에 의해 이전의 행사와 이후의 행사 사이에서의 구조적 연관성을 보여주게 된다.
프라다의 디자이너인 미우치아 프라다와 OMA 기획 조직인 AMO의 공동 작업으로 기획된 "웨이스트 다운(Waist Down)- 미우치아 프라다(Miuccia Prada)의 스커트"가 오는 4월 25일, 트랜스포머의 첫 번째 프로그램으로 서울에서 선보이게 된다. "인 모션"(in Motion)이란 주제로 열릴 이번 스커트 전시회에는 프라다 최초의 패션쇼에서 선보였던 작품부터 현재에 이르기까지의 스커트 컬렉션이 선보인다. 뿐만 아니라 한국의 유망한 패션 전공 학생들의 스커트 작품도 함께 전시될 예정으로 양측 패션계의 상호 교류를 통해, 패션이 가지는 의미에 대한 다른 문화적 견해를 확인할 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 예정이다.
스커트 전시회 후엔 트랜스포머의 공간이 영화관으로 탈바꿈하면서 영화 바벨(Babel)로 아카데미 감독상을 수상한 알레한드로 곤잘레스 이냐리투(Alejandro González Iñárritu) 감독이 선별한 영화들이 상영된다. 6월 26일부터 시작되는 독창적인 이 영화제는 영화 평론가 엘비스 미첼(Elvis Mitchell)과 공동으로 기획하였으며, "Flesh, Mind and soul"이라는 컨셉 하에, 풍부한 영화적 감성을 창조해온 육체적, 지성적, 영적인 관점의 영화들로 꾸며져, 다양한 장르와 국가 그리고 시대를 아우르는 경험을 제공할 것으로 기대된다.
그 다음의 프로그램으로 프라다 재단(Prada Foundation)은 제르마노 첼란트(Germano Celant)가 감독한 "비욘드 컨트롤"(Beyond Control)이라는 전시회를 선보인다. OMA가 디자인한 트랜스포머의 내부 인테리어는 미술 전시를 위한 공간으로 다시 '변신'해 주요 현대 예술작가들의 영감을 자아내는 마그마 같은 작품을 선보이게 된다.
이외에도 준비된 여러 문화 행사가 프라다 트랜스포머 프로젝트 시작 이전에 발표될 예정이다. 프라다와 프라다 재단(Prada Foundation)은 본 프로젝트의 혁신적인, 변화하는 구조물를 활용한 획기적인 프로그램을 개발하고자 국내 파트너사들과 긴밀하게 협력해왔다. 패션, 예술, 영화, 디자인, 퍼포먼스 등의 여러 분야가 점차 다양하고 복합적인 방식으로 상호 영향을 미침에 따라 그 밖의 프로그램들도 다양한 장르 간의 담론을 주도하고 포용하고자 하는데 목적을 두고 기획중이다.
LG전자, 현대자동차, 레드리소스가 후원하는 프라다 트랜스포머는, 16세기 조선시대의 역사적 문화재인 경희궁 내에 설치됨으로써 한국의 역사, 전통 및 민속 문화의 상징적 건물이 21세기 다면체 공간과 극적으로 배치되며 이를 통해 서로 다른 문화와 시대가 결합하는 의미 있는 프로젝트가 될 것으로 기대된다. 서울시가 보여준 문화 프로젝트에 대한 열정과 적극적인 지원은 이 프로젝트가 서울에서 진행될 수 있게 하는 데 많은 기여를 하였다. 미래지향적이고 기술에 있어 선도적인 서울의 현대적 이미지와 위상에 걸맞는 프라다 트랜스포머 프로젝트는, 패션, 예술, 건축 등 창조적 문화 분야에서 새로운 영역을 창조하고자 하는 프라다 그룹 경영이념의 일환으로 기획되었다.

A state of the art project space - Seoul, Korea
Milan, March 10, 2009 - Launching in Seoul at the end of April 2009, the highly anticipated Prada Transformer designed by OMA/Rem Koolhaas will showcase a groundbreaking series of cross-cultural exhibitions, screenings and live events. For five months this shape-shifting venue will host multiple interdisciplinary projects, bringing a unique mix of visual arts to Korea.
The Transformer combines the four sides of a tetrahedron: hexagon, cross, rectangle and circle into one pavilion. The building, entirely covered with a smooth elastic membrane, will be flipped using cranes, completely reconfiguring the visitor's experience with each new programme. Each side plan is precisely designed to organize a different event installation creating a building with four identities. Whenever one shape becomes the ground plan, the other three shapes become the walls and the ceiling defining the space, as well as referencing historic or anticipating future event configurations.
"Waist Down - Skirts by Miuccia Prada", an ongoing project by Miuccia Prada in collaboration with AMO, makes its Korean debut on April 25, showcasing a collection of skirts "in motion" ranging from the first ever Prada show to the present day. Skirts by emerging Korean fashion students will be included to show the interaction between two fashion worlds and to amplify the meaning of fashion from different cultural perspectives.
The exhibition space will then be transformed into a cinema showing a programme of films selected by Alejandro González Iñárritu, the director of Oscar-winning Babel. "Flesh, Mind and Soul" is the concept for the unique programme - to be launched on June 26 - co-curated by film critic Elvis Mitchell, spanning multiple genres, countries and decades of filmmaking including a rich and substantial amount of physical, intellectual and spiritual films that will create a whole cinematic experience.
Subsequently, the Prada Foundation will present an exhibition, "Beyond Control", curated by Germano Celant, which will 'transform' the interior of the architectural object by OMA into an inspiring magma of works by some of the most significant contemporary artists.
Further cultural activities will be announced in the lead-up to the launch of the project. Prada and the Prada Foundation have combined their resources with their local partners' to develop an extraordinary programme for the Prada Transformer's innovative, changing stages. As the fields of fashion, art, film, design and performance now inform and influence each other with increasing diversity and complexity, this programme aims to stimulate and embrace multi-disciplinarian discourse.
Situated next to the 16th-century Gyeonghui Palace, the Prada Transformer - realized with the support of LG Electronics, Hyundai Motor Company and Red Resource Inc. - dramatically juxtaposes Korean history, tradition and folklore with this 21st-century multi-dimensional event space. Due to Seoul Metropolitan Government's passion and dedication to cultural projects, the Prada Transformer was well received and fully supported by the City. Visibly attuned to Seoul's modern positioning as a forward-looking and technologically advanced metropolis, the Prada Transformer is part of Prada's global commitment to the production of new realities in fashion, art, architecture and creative culture.
The architectural project is led by Rem Koolhaas together with associates Kunle Adeyemi and Chris van Duijn, and design architect Alexander Reichert.

The website is the result of a collaboration between Prada, AMO - the mirror image think tank of Rem Koolhaas's Office for Metropolitan Architecture -- and 2x4, a multidisciplinary design studio from NY focusing on art, architecture, and fashion world wide.
The concept of the site is strongly linked to the architectural project. Equal to the built pavilion, which transforms to accommodate different events, the website regenerates its graphics and contents according to the changes in use of the actual structure along time. The main navigation system is a timeline which allows users to intuitively scroll back and forward revealing the calendar of the pavilion and the related content.

The director of Oscar-multinominated Babel, 21 Grams and Amores Perros is one of the key protagonists of the Mexican new wave of directors who have made a huge impact on cinema in recent years.
The film programme is based on physical, intellectual and spiritual films that attend, shake and speak to the different parts with which we feel and perceive cinema. Co-curated by renowned film critic Elvis Mitchell, the unique grouping of films should leave viewers "both sated and hungry for more".
Elvis Mitchell is a former film critic of the New York Times and has most recently turned his talents to television, hosting KCRW's The Treatment and his own show Under the Influence for Turner Classic Movies.

프라다 트랜스포머는 육면체, 십자형, 직사각형 및 원형이 결합한 4면체 철제 구조물로 구성되어 있다. 부드럽고 탄력있는 막으로 완전히 덮여 있는 이 건축물은 크레인을 통해 역동적으로 회전하며, 회전할 때마다 새로운 프로그램을 통해 방문자들에게 전혀 새로운 경험을 제공하게 된다. 각 면은 각기 다른 문화 행사를 진행할 수 있는 공간으로 사용될 수 있도록 완벽하게 설계됨으로써 한 공간에 4가지의 아이덴티티를 부여한다. 어느 한 면이 바닥 역할을 할 때 다른 세 면은 벽이 됨으로써 공간의 성격을 재정의하며, 이 배치에 의해 이전의 행사와 이후의 행사 사이에서의 구조적 연관성을 보여주게 된다.
